撒哈拉沙漠 形成於「特提斯洋」收縮

世界三大荒漠之一的撒哈拉沙漠，過去學界普遍認為形成於第四紀（300萬年前），不過根據中國科學院大氣物理研究所最新研究顯示，大約在700萬到1100萬年前，撒哈拉沙漠就因特提斯洋（Tethys Ocean）收縮而出現。

根據傳統的觀點，撒哈拉沙漠形成時期不會早於第四紀，因大量地質記錄顯示第四紀冰期開始的時候，撒哈拉沙漠出現了明顯的乾旱，撒哈拉沙漠乾旱程度主要受非洲夏季季風影響。

不過，根據中科院大氣所研究人員與國際科學家合作最新發現，大約700萬年到1100萬年前是北非乾旱加劇，也是撒哈拉沙漠形成的關鍵時段。此一階段特提斯洋收縮，導致非洲夏季季風顯著減弱，乾旱的沙漠環境在北非大面積形成。特提斯洋收縮不僅導致北非平均氣候發生變化，也強化了非洲夏季季風對氣候變化的效應，日後成為控制撒哈拉沙漠範圍變化的主要因素。
