今年季末大爆炸的上原浩治，球季結束後成為自由球員，紅襪目前仍考慮是否要跟上原浩治續約，根據美國媒體報導，雙方正在初步會談中。

上原浩治從2013年轉來紅襪後，2013年表現神勇，繳出4勝1敗21次救援成功1.09防禦率，其中74.1局中只被敲出33支安打送出101次三振，成為紅襪最穩定的終結者。

季後賽中，表現更為神勇，先是在美聯分區系列戰拿下2次救援成功，幫助紅襪擊敗光芒，美聯冠軍戰中，更是出賽5場3次救援成功，主投6局被敲出4支安打無失分送出9次三振，拿下美聯冠軍賽MVP，世界大賽面對紅雀同樣繳出2次救援成功，幫助紅襪拿下世界大賽冠軍。

不過2014年上原浩治表現依舊穩定，6勝5敗2.52防禦率，但在8月底幾次上場爆炸的表現，讓紅襪暫時拔掉他終結者一職，改由其他人擔任，今年紅襪71勝91敗在美聯東區排名墊底。

上原浩治在明年4月即將滿40歲，但身手依然引起許多球團的興趣，今年2.54的防禦率、出色的三振能力，讓紅襪依然有興趣跟這名老將續約，但初步紅襪已經拒絕經紀人1530萬美元的合約。
