世界盃足球賽每四年舉行一次，在剛開始32強分成8組(A至H)的分組賽。分組賽內採積分制，勝隊得到3分積分，打平則各得1分，輸隊獲得0分。小組賽的排名方法為依據積分高低順序，每組晉級前兩名。若積分相同，以[淨球數]來決定。所謂淨球數就是進球數減掉失球數的結果。若淨球數又相同，就直接比[總進球數]:倘若總進球數又相同，就比雙方對戰的戰績，若還是相持不下，最後只能憑運氣抽籤來決定。
