中國當局禁止官員在公共場所吸菸，要他們做百姓的表率。

新華社報導，中共中央委員會與國務院以內部通報的形式，頒布新的規定，禁止官員在學校、醫院、體育場以及大眾運輸工具上吸菸，執行公務時，也不得彼此或是向賓客遞菸。

大陸有三億多吸菸人口。2011年，中國衛生部頒布法令，禁止在室內公共場所、包括飯店以及餐廳吸菸，不過言者諄諄、聽者藐藐，主管單位沒有嚴格執行，法令形同具文。
